Be A Better Man in 2010
It’s isn’t just the end of a year; it’s the end of a decade. And a pretty significant decade at that. Ten years ago, it was New Year’s Eve 2000! You were dancing to Prince and laughing off the threat of Y2K (even if you were secretly a little apprehensive about it) and the party rocked all night long. Then you woke up into a hangover and a Bloody Mary and a fresh new year. Then that year flew by, and nine more years after it, and now here we are: New Year’s Eve 2010.
We live in a culture that prizes youth, and because of this, we’re conditioned for nostalgia. We see the time that’s behind us as time lost, full of opportunities that are now lost too. And at the end of a decade, we feel it tenfold. Well, at AM we say: Enough! Enough sniffling over what could have been. It’s time for a mind-shift. And here’s how we’re going to initiate it: take the closest piece of paper and on it write down three things that you’ve accomplished since that New Year's Eve party 10 years ago. Maybe you got a promotion that you fought for and deserved. Maybe you mustered up the balls to approach the woman who is now your girlfriend. Whatever their scale or significance, we just want you to write down three things that you did to make your life better.
You’ve accomplished a lot more than these three things in the past 10 years. If we gave you the time to do so, you could expand that list to 30 accomplishments. But we’re done dwelling on the past. We’re in the middle of a mind-shift! So now that you’ve recalled your abilities to actualize the goals that you set out, in order to be the executor of your own self-improvement, it’s time to think about how you’re going apply those powers in the year ahead. Flip that piece of paper over, and write down the one change you want to see in your life in 2010. The change that’s going to make you a Better Man.
Over the 12 days of the holidays, we’re publishing our Better Man series. Each day we’ll provide a guide toward implementing one of the changes that we know our guys want to pursue. We hope that one of them is your change. And if none of them are, we’re pretty sure your Better Man guide is probably hiding somewhere in the AskMen.com archives. Just send me an e-mail at jamesb@askmen.com and I’ll point you to it. And if we don’t have that guide on the site, our editors will work with our writers to prepare it for you, and I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
At AM, it’s our job to help our readers change and become Better Men. And when it comes to positive change, there’s always no time like the present, but only occasionally a time like the start of a new year -- and rarely a time like the start of a new decade.

15 “Man This Sucks” Moments
We’ve all been face with unfortunate situations. Perhaps one of us has tripped on an acorn. Maybe a car drove by on a rainy day and it splashed a nice amount of water on our jeans.
But for the most part we’re not faced with situations that are as dire as the ones in these pictures.
Enjoy these 15 “Man this Sucks” moments
Has Technology Made Things Better or Worse?
According to 1,504 American adults surveyed over a 5-day period, cellphones have made the world a better place. Tattoos, on the other hand, haven't done a damn thing! Everything else falls indolently in between. [PewCenter via ReadWriteWeb via IntoMobile]
Underwear Bomb: The New, Stained, Patted-Down Crotch of Terror
First there was the shoe bomb. Now Al Qaeda has taken it to the next level: Yesterday's failed terrorist attack was supposed to be delivered by a suicide bomber with the payload sewn into his underpants.
ABC News is reporting that Al Qaeda sewed about 80 grams of PETN, an explosive that's similar to nitro-glycerin, into the Nigerian attacker's underwear. For comparison, the shoe bomber only had about 50 grams in his footwear. Luckily, officials are saying the detonator was either too small or wasn't making proper contact with the explosive.
What does this mean for the future of airline security? After the shoe bomb attempt, we all had to start taking off our shoes at the screening line. Are we going to start walking through the detector in our birthday suits now?
Security expert Bruce Scheiner points out that increased security in these sorts of situations just doesn't work, because the tools TSA uses can't detect schemes like these:
I don't want to even think about how much C4 I can strap to my legs and walk through your magnetometers.
Not to mention how ineffective the whole no movement during the last hour of flight idea is. In his words:
Do we really think the terrorist won't think of blowing up their improvised explosive devices during the first hour of flight?
For years I've been saying this:
Only two things have made flying safer [since 9/11]: the reinforcement of cockpit doors, and the fact that passengers know now to resist hijackers.
This week, the second one worked over Detroit. Security succeeded.
Whatever inconveniences this may cause, I'm just glad that we averted another disaster. It's pretty unbelievable that twice—twice!—this stuff has snuck by security in various articles of clothing, and both times we've been incredibly lucky that no one got hurt.
Here's to hoping airport security figures out a way to accurately screen for explosives attached to the body soon, without needing all of us to get a little too friendly with each other at the metal detector. [ABC News]

Sexy Saturday: Tim Tebow’s Girl Erin Drewes
There was a whole lot of speculation about a month ago in regard to some racy body paint photos of a girl that had a striking resemblance to one Erin Drewes, the busty girl you see above.
The real issue here is “who the hell cares?” Both girls are hot. Personally I believe it’s the same girl and more importantly this whole Tebow being a virgin thing might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
Regardless, I like hot chicks and to provide my readers with them.
No more bullshit, Erin Drewes after the jump
Profiles In Courage: The Michael Vick Story
The Ed Block Courage award "honors those National Football League players who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage." And, apparently, Mike Vick.
Every team selects one player as their annual recipient. This year, the Browns voted for Mike Furrey, for his tireless work with local charities. The Jaguars voted for Richard Collier, for staying strong in the face of his paralysis. The Eagles voted — unanimously — for Michael Vick, for not killing any more dogs this year.
Vick was about as humble as you'd expect:
I've had to overcome a lot, more than probably one single individual can bear," Vick said. "Take a look at what I've been through. You ask certain people to walk in my shoes, they probably couldn't do it — probably 95 percent of the people in this world."
Yeah man, it's tough being Vick. Who else could balance the twin burdens of playing pro sports and not committing any felonies? (Besides the vast majority of pro athletes, of course.)
Supporters point to Vick's charitable appearances, including speaking of the perils of dogfighting on behalf of the Humane Society. I'll just point out that these engagements were in front of cameras, first for his big 60 Minutes comeback special, and later his BET reality show.
According to studies, the recidivism rate in this country is about 60 percent. So, Mike Vick, congratulations on staying out of prison for the last six months. That must have taken real courage.

Kourtney Kardashian Leads the P.M. Portfolio
Click on the photo for more of Kourtney Kardashian
In many respects, she’s hotter than her sister Kim, because Kim looks like a cartoon and Kourtney actually looks real. But since Kourtney just gave birth to her first kid MILF status is pretty badass. I still like Kim, but it’s getting close.

Most Popular Firefox Extensions and Themes of 2009
This year's release of Firefox 3.5 gave us a lot of reasons to like it, but its extensibility remains everyone's favorite feature. These add-ons and theme tools were the most popular in the year gone by.
This list is culled from a straight listing of the most popular posts that offered a Firefox extension for download in 2009. We're not including posts about configuring Firefox, or even our own hand-rolled Firefox add-on packs—even if they were pretty popular, too. Let's get to the good stuff.
Firefox 3.7 Theme Makes Your Browser Look Awesome
One of the greatest things about Firefox is that its development happens way out wide in the open. When the design workers start coming up with preliminary sketches of a new release, anyone can peek at them and even compile them into a theme, which does just what the headline suggests.
All-Glass Firefox Enables Slick Transparency Effects
Windows Vista and 7 feature some fairly nice looking transparency effects, but if your primary browser doesn't use them, it can feel a bit disconnected. All-Glass Firefox v2 tweaks your browser to look just, well, proper in its fancy-pants surroundings.
"Vacuum Places Improved" Speeds Up Firefox with a Click of Your Mouse
You can speed up Firefox by cleaning up its fragmented database, and the Vacuum Places Improved 0.3 extension automates that admittedly pain-in-the-butt process.
Gmail Redesigned 3.0 Focuses on Speed and Message Space
Google Redesigned, a multi-site suite that trades Google's blue/white/minimal look for a darker, sleeker feel, kept improving its transformative powers this year, adding a host of improvements in its 3.0 release, and later releasing a new version with GReader Redesigned for the RSS hounds.
Dislike 0.2 Adds a Disapproving Dislike Button to Facebook
"I'm having SUCH a bad day—the cleaning lady TOTALLY left her Pine Sol smell all over my bed linens!" That, my friends, is why clever JavaScript tweakers created the Dislike extension.
TinEye Adds Reverse Image Lookup to Firefox
Many of the pictures and illustrations you find across the web aren't in their original form—and many can be had at better, perhaps more wallpaper-worthy sizes. The TinEye extension makes it a simple right-click maneuver to search out similar copies of any image you come across.
SkipScreen Lets You Pass Go and Collect Your Download
Sometimes, great stuff has to be hosted on public download services, because the file—or the attention it's getting—is just too much for our meek little personal sites. And the download sites often make it as painful as possible to grab those files. SkipScreen acts as an automated intermediary, jumping through the necessary hoops and entering the key presses required.
FireFound Tracks Your Stolen Computer, Nukes Your Personal Data
This neat little extension, winner of the Extend Firefox 3.5 contest, utilizes lots of Firefox's built-in features, like geo-location and the extension framework, to offer wary laptop users a way to nuke their personal data, passwords, and history if necessary, track where their machine is logging on after a theft, and cull all kinds of data from the thief. FireFound is, in other words, a smart thing to install if your laptop ever leaves the home.
Gui:config Gives Easy Access to Hidden Firefox Settings
A lot of helpful stuff is tucked away in Firefox's about:config
menus. Gui:config brings them into focus and offers a graphical way to manage them. As the How-To Geek puts it, it's amazing that this isn't something being considered for mainstream distribution in the browser.
Memory Fox Manages Firefox's Memory Use, Aims to Keep It Low
(Windows only): Firefox is decently light with memory on startup, but extensions and plug-ins drag it down as you actually use it. Memory Fox monitors Firefox's memory use and, once it reaches your pre-set limit, whips it back into shape.
Daum Blue Firefox Theme is Clean, Simple, and Elegant
(Windows only): Well, the headline and picture kind of say it all about Daum Blue, but it's worth noting that beyond looks, it's also fairly customizable, and looks even better on Vista and Windows 7 systems.
Decreased Productivity Helps You Browse at Work Without Getting Busted
Sure, kind of anathema for this site's stated mission, but giving your mind a break at work has real mental benefits, even if your boss doesn't think so.
UrlbarExt Adds Super Powers to the Awesome Bar
If you're likely to do more at a web site than just simply bookmark it, UrlbarExt is like a Leatherman for your AwesomeBar. Head to a site's root, search the site on Google, and do much more from a small array of address bar buttons.
Foxmarks Becomes Xmarks, Adds Search and Suggestion Features
Another headline that pretty much says it all. We weren't a big fan of Xmarks' new "discovery" features, but its growing reach into Chrome and other browsers make the former Foxmarks' expansion a good thing.
Magnetiser Downloads Torrents When No Torrent File Is Available
Given the recent legal crackdown on BitTorrent-centered sites, magnet links (explained here) are increasingly popular. Magnetiser makes it easy to track down a working torrent link to grab the file you're looking for.
Integrated Gmail Updates with Improved Looks and Handy Features
It must be mentioned that, beyond smooshing together Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Reader into one neatly-arranged Gmail page, Integrated Gmail also customizes every niggling detail of those combined apps, making it worth the try-out, even if you think you like your Google spaces separated into different tabs.
Omnibar Extension Collapses Firefox's Address and Search Boxes into One
Omnibar is one of the clever ways Firefox can make itself into a Google Chrome clone, and we love that kind of openness 'round here.
Invisible Hand Subtly Shows Best Web Prices
If you're always looking at online purchases and wondering if you could save more before pulling the trigger, Invisible Hand affirms your hunches for you, dropping down and showing lower prices wherever it can find them.
Ubiquity Sees Major Update, New Look, Better Performance
Mozilla's future-facing automation and shortcut engine, Ubiquity, continued to get awesome-r in 2009.
App Tabs Creates Permanent, Icon-Only Tabs, Firefox 4.0-Style
We dug the idea of permanent, favicon-only tabs when a helpful reader explained it to us, but the App Tabs extension took a multi-step process and made it far more simple.
Not seeing your favorite add-on released in 2009 here, or covered anywhere at Lifehacker? Can't believe your favorite app doesn't get more attention? Let's hear all about it in the comments.

The Various Types of Sexy Female Sports Uniforms
I’m not going to lie. I don’t have a ton of interest in women’s sports. It’s not that I don’t respect them. I 100% do. Bottom line if you’re the best at a sport as a female you should get paid and excel at said sport. However, men are better. They are more entertaining and the games are simply more interesting because of the skill level.
And let’s face it. If there weren’t a certain amount of sexism involved we wouldn’t be seeing as many scantily clad sports uniforms as we do today. The ladies are wearing less and less and I have no problem with this.
It makes the sports a bit better.
So here are the various types of sexy female sports uniforms. Enjoy

Fifth Grader Can Type 119 Words a Minute
Here’s something you don’t see every day…
Fifth-grader Mackenzie Lundgren has awed her classmates and teachers at her school in Auburn, Kan., with her lightning-fast typing.
The average adult can type between 50 and 70 words per minute, and that’s not counting errors. But Mackenzie can type 119 words per minute with just three errors. The average student in her class can only type about 20 words a minute.
OK well guess what? Number One. I can type 119 words a minute too. Are you ready? Go! a;ldfkja;sdlfkj a;lkjf;aljfw;eioru[oufpqui3 a;klwj;qapf h ;KHRJKRHJQKRHQUY lak;joit. See how easy that is?
Second of all, there are two things I can do that this girl can’t that are way better than her typing skills.
1. I can buy beer
2. I can legally watch porn
