Unfortunately, most college students know at least one person who has gotten a DUI.  As law enforcement in the state has been cracking down more and more on DUI’s, it is important to know the consequences of what’s becoming an all too common occurrence.

For a first time drunk driving conviction, a $450 dollar fine and another $500 fee for a DUI assessment can be expected.  More than just paying nearly $1,000, the driver will also spend time behind bars, up to ten days.  To further punish the driver, the state will suspend his or her license from anywhere between 90 days to an entire year.  This is for just one DUI conviction, so for those who think that getting a DUI is not that big of deal, they are wrong.

Many people who are convicted of DUI’s often wonder if they should hire a very expensive defense attorney.  The cost of such lawyers can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $25,000, which, for most college students, is far too much money to pay to attempt to get a lesser punishment for their crime.  However, there are various advantages to hiring a lawyer for their case; for example, lawyers can help their clients understand what their rights are, what not to say in court, and the attorney might assist their clients in receiving a lesser jail sentence and a smaller fine.

Whatever the case may be, college students must be more responsible than ever when it comes to wild nights out.  If people want to avoid massive fines, jail stays, lawyer fees, and a suspended license, then pay the money for a cab ride home; it will cost you much less than a DUI.
